The artwork titled “The Torment of Saint Anthony” (also known as “The Temptation of Saint Anthony”), believed to have been created around 1487–88, is often attributed to Michelangelo. It is said that Michelangelo produced a faithful replica of Martin Schongauer’s renowned engraving when he was just 12 or 13 years old. However, there is ongoing debate regarding the true authorship of this painting. Currently housed in the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, the piece depicts a familiar medieval theme derived from sources like the Golden Legend. It portrays Saint Anthony (AD 251 – 356) facing demonic assaults in the desert, which he bravely withstands. While commonly known as the “Temptation of St Anthony,” this rendition apparently illustrates a later incident wherein St Anthony, typically supported by angels as he traverses the desert, finds himself ambushed mid-air by devils.
